Russian artist Yulia Brodskaya creates playful illustrations, installations and paper cut works using a unique method she developed after leaving her graphic design job in 2006. The artist rolls tiny strips of colorful paper into spirals that she aggregates into larger shapes, creating textural works that lie somewhere on the horizon between two and three dimensions. Her whimsical, springy work invites a sense of optimism. While paper cut art is typically a small-scale medium, Brodskaya often creates mural-sized artworks and installations for commercial clients, using paper to transform rigid spaces into fantastical realms. Byrne’s Euclid—Oliver Byrne, a 19th century engineer, designed this version of Euclid’s Elements, replacing symbols and letters with colored shapes and lines. Not only is it a beautiful feat of graphic design, it also pushes the boundaries of algebraic conventions, revealing the dependence of modern mathematical languages on letters as constructs, rather than necessities.

Typography/Topography

An Earth-inspired typeface designed by Siyu Cao that creates shapes and letters from classic typographic map features. The two-dimensional forms are great, but the 3-D carvings really drive it to the mountaintop.

I’ve seen a lot of Earth as Art projects, but never a typeface. Excellent work.

Harmonographs

A harmonograph is a mechanical device consisting of two or more pendulums attached to a pen. The swinging pendulums control the motion of the pen, tracing out a geometric pattern on a sheet of paper.

Since the system is damped by friction, the pattern spirals in on itself as time progresses.

Each of the GIFs above simulate the output of a 4-pendulum system (modeled after a harmonograph as configured in this video). The different outputs are generated by using different pendulum length ratios in each simulation.

Thousands of Paper Sheets Layered Into Colorful Formations Charles Clary creates mesmerizing paper sculptures that will whisk you off to another world! Each one of his hand-cut paper formations is a blend of geometric shapes with suggestions of strange land formations, sound waves, or cell structures. He says, “I have created a viral like environment that creeps and grows across its surface. Upon viewing this world one might question whether or not we are voyeurs into this world or if this world is voyeuristically invading our own.” Clary uses layers of paper, hand-cut into amorphous blobs, to create a variety of interesting, abstract shapes. His combination of bold colors, texture, and dimension form captivating visual arrangements that can take months to construct. A single installation can have as many as 4,000 individual cut sheets of paper, up to 30 panels, and over 14,000 spacers. The thin stacks of color spiral outward in exciting patterns that entice viewers to closely investigate each intriguing structure.
